Bellingham police reach out to kids, hope to build relationships

Bellingham police are handing out Slurpee coupons to kids in hopes of creating positive interactions.

Bellingham police officers, like every officer, confront people breaking the law. But they're taking a new approach in hopes of reducing those criminal encounters.

They're handing out Slurpee coupons to kids, many of whom come from families who have never had positive interaction with police.

A lot of the kids hightail it out of there when they see the police car in their apartment complex, but once the officer shows them the coupon-- their attitudes change.
