Ballard sexual assault fliers: Seattle police respond to questions

This flier in Ballard told about an alleged sexual assault on January 5. Police said the incident was reported Jan. 10, but the victim has not yet met with a detective.

A flier posted in Ballard last week said a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by four men, and that raised concerns on Next Door neighborhood websites by people wanting additional information.

KIRO 7 contacted Seattle police on Monday and Tuesday about the flier. On Tuesday, a spokesman said the case number was real, but did not comment on the validity of the allegations and would not speak on camera.

On Wednesday, Seattle Police Detective Patrick Michaud told KIRO 7 the flier was posted by friends of the 16-year-old's family.

The flier said that about 10:30 p.m. Friday, January 5, the 16-year-old girl was walking home through Salmon Bay Park when she was grabbed by four men and sexually assaulted. Salmon Bay Park is at 2001 NW Canoe Place.

The case was assigned to a detective, but that detective has not had a chance to meet with the victim, a department spokesman said, which is why Seattle police said they could not comment on the validity of the allegations.

On Wednesday, Michaud said the detective was still working to get in touch with the victim. The victim and the family have not yet responded to phone calls.

Police said the incident was not reported until January 10 when the alleged victim went to the hospital.

Ballard is covered by the North Precinct. But East Precinct officers responded likely because the hospital was in their precinct area, spokesman Mark Jamieson said.

The flier asks for anyone who heard something that night or who may have security camera footage to contact the East Precinct and reference incident 18-11435.

Anyone who has information is asked the call the sexual assault unit instead of the East Precinct, Jamieson said. That unit can be reached at 206-684-5575.

Jamieson did not confirm the number of suspects in the report.

Michaud said he understands people are concerned and said if detectives can confirm there are suspects at large, they will inform the public.
