Activist and educator Nikkita Oliver to run against Mayor Murray

SEATTLE — According to the Seattle Times, Nikkita Oliver, an attorney, community organizer and well-spoken-word artist in Seattle's Black Lives Matter movement, is planning to run for mayor against Ed Murray.

Oliver will be running for office under the Peoples Party of Seattle, which is a community-centered grassroots political party led by and accountable to the people, according to a website for Oliver and the party.

She is Murray's highest-profile challenger thus far.

Oliver, 31 works as a teaching artist and mentor in Seattle Public Schools and for a nonprofit, Creative Justice, which uses artwork with court-involved youth.

She has law and education degrees from the University of Washington and received the 2015 artist human rights leader award from the Seattle Office of Civil rights.
