18-year-old man killed, friend surrenders to police after shooting in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — An 18-year-old man was killed in a shooting in Lakewood on Sunday evening, police said.

Lakewood officers responded around 6:35 p.m. to a shooting at a house in the 14800 block of Washington Avenue Southwest. They found an 18-year-old man with a single gunshot wound. Responding officers gave him aid, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was later identified as Lavonte Fleming.

Detectives later learned that the victim was alone with his 17-year-old friend during the shooting. The friend told police that only the victim had been shot, but he didn't elaborate further and declined to give a statement.

Two days later, Oct. 15, the 17-year-old voluntarily surrendered to detectives and was taken into custody. He was then booked into the Pierce County Jail on charges of first-degree manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm. The boy was later transferred to Remann Hall Pierce County Juvenile Detention Center.
