15-year-old struck by gunfire in south Seattle

SEATTLE — A 15-year-old girl was shot multiple times in the street Sunday and police are asking for help to find the gunman. The incident took place at 3 p.m. in the 11000 block of 59th Avenue South in south Seattle.

Police said the girl’s injuries don’t appear life-threatening.

“I was in the back room, my kids were in the front here and I heard a series of like seven or eight shots in rapid succession and it sounded really, really close by so I didn’t poke my head out or anything," Enos Kline, who lives racross the street from where the teen was shot, said. "I just got my kids in the back into safety and we laid low until we heard sirens,”

After Kline knew his two little boys weren’t in danger he looked outside.

“We could see like [a] tan car there had some blood on the side of it; the fire department came by after several hours and hosed everything down but it was quite the commotion,” Kline said.

He was looking at the aftermath of the shooting and because police have not said if the girl lives on his street or if she was targeted, he now is wondering if his two little boys are in danger.

“If she was just randomly targeted it could have been my kids playing in the front with their Hot Wheels and that’s a little bit difficult to grapple with, frankly,” he said.

Kline said that just last week his house was burglarized.

“Somebody had kicked into our back door and ransacked our house and took some stuff, so definitely a spike in crime, I don’t think it’s related but it’s definitely been a rough week here.”

And now, he says he’s left talking to a 4- and 6-year-old about a very grown-up and very sad reality.

“We had another talk with them about law enforcement and how they’re here to look for suspects,” Kline said.
