Yacht burns in massive fire at Roche Harbor

ROCHE HARBOR, Wash. — An 80-foot luxury vessel was destroyed after catching fire Wednesday morning in Roche Harbor on San Juan Island.

Firefighters responded to the fire about 10 a.m, and footage from Chopper 7 showed massive flames and black smoke pouring from the yacht.

Wednesday afternoon, the marina general manager said the fire was started by an electrical problem. The fire happened on the side of the dock away from the gas dock, and the flames never reached the gas. Resort and the flights are expected to be back to normal Thursday.

The yacht is an Ocean Alexander, and those typically sell for about $5.4 million. Water was being poured on the yacht at the Roche Harbor Resort marina, but seemed to have little effect on the fire initially.

The Coast Guard said no one was injured. Kenmore Air was not flying to Roche Harbor late Wednesday because of the fire.

A Washington Department of Ecology spill response team responded at the scene.

Because of the smoke and fire at the resort's marina, services in the restaurant, market, retail outlets and other amenities were suspended Wednesday.
