Inmates rescue 3 boys from Salmon Creek

HAZEL DELL, Wash. — Three boys were rescued by prison inmates Wednesday afternoon after their boat capsized on Salmon Creek.

KPTV in Portland reported an inmate crew from the Larch Corrections Center was finishing work where the Klineline Bridge crosses Highway 99.

Three boys on board a canoe lost control of the boat in the frigid waters. The boat then capsized.

One of the inmates saw two heads bobbing in the water with the canoe upside down. He jumped into the creek to get to the boys.

Another inmate also jumped into the water and helped one boy get to the shore, and made his way to the other inmate and boys.

Vancouver firefighters and a Clark County technical rescue team arrived at the location and got the boys back to shore. The inmates made it back to the shore safely on their own.

The three boys and inmates were taken to a local hospital with mild hypothermia.
