Illinois eliminating its ‘tampon tax;' Washington may follow

Illinois is getting rid it’s so-called “tampon tax.”

Currently, feminine hygiene products there, as well as in Washington State, are taxed as luxury items.

But on January 1 in Illinois, tampons will be placed in the same category as necessities, such as shampoo.

This year, New York and Connecticut also passed bills to get rid of the tax.

A lawmaker from Tacoma is working to do the same in Washington.

But if Washington eliminates the tax on feminine hygiene products, the state would lose millions of dollars.

To make up for it, Representative Laurie Jinkins says she might try to find an existing exemption that could be taxed again.

Jinkins plans to introduce her bill in the next legislative session.
