Crews battle exploding ammo, hoarding situation during fire at White Center home

WHITE CENTER, Wash. — Fire crews arriving at a house fire had to deal with exploding ammunition and a hoarding situation inside a White Center home.

Police said calls came in to dispatch shortly before midnight about a fire that began in the kitchen at a home in the 9900 block of 28th Avenue South West.

Neighbors told arriving crews that a man lived there alone and they believed he was still inside.

Police said rounds of ammunition were heard firing when they arrived.

When firefighters entered the home to try to find the homeowner, there were boxes upon boxes piled up throughout the house, making it difficult for firefighters to move around,  and all the trash and boxes of things were fuel for the fire.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire that was contained to the kitchen.

The homeowner was found outside a nearby house.

The man told investigators that his cat was unaccounted for.

There were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
