Here's why PSE says your bills are higher

A number of Puget Sound Energy customers are reporting higher than normal electric bills for this year compared to this time last year.

“We understand it’s no fun seeing a larger than expected utility bill, but there are three key reasons for the increases,” PSE wrote on its Facebook page.

Here are PSE's reasons:

  • It was colder: This past December was about 20% colder than December 2014. More people using more energy to heat their homes and businesses meant higher bills.
  • Higher rates: Last year saw an 11% increase in electric rates due to various adjustments, including a decrease in the federal (BPA) Energy Exchange Credit. An average, residential monthly electric bill for our customers has gone from $93 in 2014 to $104 in 2015.
  • No credit this year: There was a one-time credit last year that averaged about $35 for each customer that was applied to December 2014 power usage, related to the sale of part of our electric system in Jefferson County.
