Gonzaga poised to make deep run in NCAA Tournament

Updated:

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - As the NCAA Tournament gets under way, the number 1 seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs are poised to make a deep run.

The Bulldogs will play their first game Thursday in Salt Lake City against Southern University.

Gonzaga's sophomore star Kelly Olynyk, surrounded by Bulldogs fans, made the cover of Sports Illustrated this week.

The team calls the rabid fans that sit down front at the Gonzaga home games the Kennel Club, and they’ve had a lot to bark about this season.

The Zags lost only two games this year and are the number 1 seed in the West for the first time in university history.

On the team is a familiar name -- David Sockton --  the son of NBA legend John Stockton, who also played at Gonzaga and is a regular in the stands.

John Stockton played for the Utah Jazz his entire NBA career.

Now, his son will open the NCAA tournament in his old stomping ground of Salt Lake City.

KIRO 7 was in the arena yesterday, as the CBS Sports trucks were being set up.

They're running cables, setting up cameras and putting special decals on the court – it’s a major production to get ready for March Madness.

Thursday’s Gonzaga game will air around 1 p.m. on TBS.
