Frigid temperatures take toll on water pipes

SEATTLE — A broken water main and frigid temperatures left a layer of ice on a West Seattle road Sunday afternoon.

Crews responded to the area of 40th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Barton Street where the water main broke.

Due to the cold temperatures, the water quickly froze, making an icy slippery patch.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News spoke with spoke with crews who were in Rainier Valley repairing pipes that burst.

“You’re looking at a pipe that couldn’t take the temperature and froze and busted,” said Aaron Lester.

Lester said the cold weather has kept Beacon Plumbing busy.

“Know where your shut off is that way. If you do have a water emergency, you know how to turn off your water,” said Lester.
