SEATTLE - A former University of Washington researcher was arrested by Seattle police for possessing and distributing child pornography.

Eric Shulenberger worked in the Oceanography Department and other departments from 1997-2011, primarily helping to write grants. Investigators said the child porn found on his home computer, dated back three to four years -- meaning he was downloading while he was still a researcher.

His former colleague Karl Banse was surprised by the arrest.

"I don't think (he'd do) that," Banse said.

A UW spokesman said Shulenberger worked primarily with research grad students, and there are no records of him being part of school programs involving children.

KIRO 7 knocked on the door of the former researcher's north Seattle home, but no one came to the door.

Court document's show Shulenberger told investigators he found child porn "interesting," and thought kids enjoyed sex at a young age. The documents also show that federal investigators are also looking at the former researcher.
