BELFAIR, Wash. - Investigators in Denmark and Australia discovered child pornography on the Internet showing a young girl being sexually assaulted in a school classroom. They used GPS information embedded in the video to determine it had been taken inside Belfair Elementary School in Mason County. The FBI moved in Friday and arrested a suspect in the case, who is the former PTA president at the elementary school, 37-year-old David Navarro.
It's upsetting news for parents with children who attend the school.
Kathern Browning told KIRO 7 Eyewitness news, "It makes me angry it makes me want to take my kids out of the school district."
Federal prosecutors believe Navarro videotaped an 8-year-old girl who was a student at the school as she was being sexually assaulted and then allegedly posted those videos to the internet from his Belfair home.
KIRO 7 South Sound Reporter Richard Thompson went to that house today looking for answers but a woman inside the house would only repeatedly scream "you're trespassing, you need to leave."
Neighbors like Danielle Payne say they are heartbroken for the young victim.
"The emotional toll it's going to take on that child for the rest of her life. It's just unbearable," said Payne. She became more upset when we told her Navarro had been arrested in San Diego in 2009. He was accused of exposing himself and sexually assaulting a child but the charges were dropped.
Since Navarro had no criminal convictions he came up clean on a background check when he became involved with the PTA.
The North Mason School District Superintendent David Peterson believes alleged crimes happened outside school hours telling KIRO 7, "We believe our procedures are appropriate and kids are safe at our schools."
Parents however say it sure does not seem safe if a child can be sexually assaulted by the PTA president inside a school.
Parent Courtney Hamilton said, "You let him roam around your school without somebody there to supervise."
Navarro is currently in federal custody facing charges for possession, distributing and receiving child pornography.
