Fire near Leavenworth triples in size

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — Fire managers now estimate the "Eagle" fire has burned 1,500 acres northeast of Leavenworth. It is five miles away from the tourist town, and not headed toward the community.

The wildfire is threatening 65 homes near Eagle Creek Road.

On Wednesday, Sue Sprague and her family waited at a sheriff's roadblock for a chance to go into her family's vacation home to collect some photos. She also wanted to set sprinklers to water down the deck and yard. Rob and Stephanie Torbett had already left their place, but came back to grab some personal items, including stuffed animals for their kids.

Three hundred firefighters are on the fire lines, with more coming in from across the state. Their challenges include hot, dry weather and difficult terrain.

So far, none of the fire has been contained.
