Fire causes $50k damage at West Seattle playground

The cause of a fire at a West Seattle school playground remains undetermined as fire investigators said there was no obvious source of ignition.

Firefighters were called to Schmitz Park Elementary School in the 5000 block of Southwest Spokane Street at 1:19 a.m. Thursday for a report of flames coming from the back of the school.

The first arriving firefighters found flames coming from a playground area and quickly knocked down the fire which was confined to wood chips.

The heat and flames also melted and damaged metal and plastic playground equipment.

The damage estimate is $50,000.
