Feds: 88 percent of Washington schools failing

by: Joanna Small, KIRO 7 STAFF Updated:

Eighty-eight percent of Washington state schools are failing, according to the federal government.

For months, school districts have been telling KIRO 7 that would be the case but student test results just released by the state superintendent confirm it.
Superintendent Randy Dorn made the announcement at the state Capitol Wednesday.  Dorn says Washington is the only state in the country that lost its No Child Left Behind waiver, which means every student in every school regardless of their special needs, has to meet grade level standards.  That didn’t happen in nearly 2,000 of our schools.
"To explain that to parents, that they may have just gotten a letter in May that their kid was going to an exemplary school that got honored by the state superintendent and state school board and then they get a letter in the mail that said they're a failing school,” is difficult, Dorn says.
Coming up at 5 p.m. on KIRO 7 Eyewitness News, reporter Joanna Small spoke with a mother at one of the state's worst performing schools by the federal standard.  That mother tells us just how confusing receiving that kind of letter has been.
