Federal Way teacher arrested in student sex scandal

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - A teacher at a Federal Way high school was arrested in a sex scandal with a 17-year-old student who says she has been having sex with him for two years.

Eli Thomas Godbolt, 33, was arrested as he was leaving his Auburn home Monday and booked into the King County Regional Justice Center on charges of second-degree rape.

Police said that on Sunday, the student told her mother that she has had sexual relations with her teacher at Todd Beamer High School starting when she was 15 years old, with the last incident occurring in February.

"This is going to be a difficult and emotional thing for the victim. Although she's 17, she's still a victim.  We're just going to support her and her family and the school district to get her through this long recovery period that it will be," said Cathy Schrock with Federal Way police.

A statement of probable cause said two of the encounters occurred in Federal Way and two others occurred in Auburn and Tacoma.

Police documents said there was evidence that was recovered from the victim’s home.

School officials said the teacher is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Godbolt was arraigned on Tuesday and released on his own recognizance.  He has not been charged.

The King County Prosecutor’s Office and Federal Way police detectives are continuing the investigation with the anticipation of official charges being filed.

Godbolt teaches English and math at the school.    Students said he was a good teacher, and some described him as energetic, funny and cool.
