Man struck by debris while driving on I-5

DUPONT, Wash. — A Yelm man was injured Saturday afternoon after being struck by debris while driving, troopers said.

The incident happened before 3 p.m., when the driver was traveling on the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near DuPont.

Troopers said debris went through the 23-year-old Richard Gagnon’s windshield and struck him in the head.

The driver was taken to Tacoma General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  His wife said he is in the ICU and that he will need surgery for a forehead gash.  He will likely be out of the hospital in a week.

Trooper Guy Gill said they believe the debris was run over and sent airborne by another vehicle. It was not thrown from an overpass.
