Driver who shot at Mason County deputy arrested

MASON COUNTY, Wash. — Mason County Sheriff's deputies say they've arrested the man who fired on a deputy during a high speed chase east of Shelton last week.

Police said the incident began about 11 p.m. Thursday when the deputy tried to pull over a car at Highway 3 and East Agate Road that was going about 40 mph over the speed limit.

When the driver failed to stop, the deputy began a pursuit. Officers identified the driver as 27-year-old Joshua Weythman Baker.

During the pursuit, Baker showed a firearm and shot from the moving vehicle.  The deputy, who was not hit, backed off but continued to follow.

Baker and his female passenger stopped the car at Johns Prairie Road and Capitol Hill Road. When they got out of the car, the deputy fired at the armed driver.

Both suspects ran from the scene. Deputies, two K-9s and a police helicopter searched until 3 a.m., but did not find the couple.

The Sheriff’s Office says no one was believed to have been hit by the deputy’s gunfire.

Baker was arrested Monday night.
