BELLEVUE, Wash. - Quick Facts:
- Woman crashed though 2 interior walls
- 27 children in day care at time of crash
- No one hurt
There were some terrifying moments at a Bellevue daycare when an SUV came crashing through the building, narrowly missing several children. It happened on Northeast 21st Street.
Police say it appears to be an accident, and they don’t expect any charges. They tell us a mom dropping off her two kids mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brakes.
Lauren Wenham was inside around 9:30 Tuesday morning when the Honda CRV barreled through two rooms. Her thoughts went straight to her family—blood-related and not.
"The kids in this school are like our family and my family works here as well so it's an emotional thing thinking about that,” she told us, fighting back tears.
There were five children and a staff member in one of the affected rooms, luckily on the other side. The 27 children total inside the building and the two in the car with the driver were all just fine.
"Our staff was amazing, did everything they were supposed,” said Linda Kebely. She and her husband David Kebely are Lauren’s parents, and they own the school. They were most concerned about the driver.
“I went up to her, she was sitting down and I said 'you know I know you feel terrible but we're going to get through this,’” David told us.
They had to shut-down Tuesday, until the SUV can be driven from the classroom. And also to give everyone time to recover -- it's been an emotional ordeal for the whole America's Child family.
"It's amazing, a miracle,” Linda Kebely said.
Amazingly there’s no structural damage to the school and the owners tell us it will take about a week to clean up the mess. In the meantime, the day care has four other classrooms so while they’re close Tuesday, they’ll be open Wednesday.
