DOD: JBLM solider killed in Afghanistan attack


JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - The U.S. Department of Defense announced on Monday a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier was killed on Saturday in Zharay, Kandahar province, Afghanistan.


Officials said Army Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, died when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.


He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division with JBLM.


Hernandez was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and is originally from Salinas, Calif.
