Remains found off SR 510 ID'd as missing Spanaway woman

THURSTON COUNTY, Washington - Human remains found off State Route 510 near the Red Wind Casino are those of a 53-year-0ld Spanaway woman whose disappearance was being investigated as a homicide earlier this month, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

Rita Catherine Kagawa disappeared in late May after a court awarded her more than $67,000 in retirement money her ex-husband had failed to pay her. Investigators said they weren't calling anyone a suspect, but that circumstances surrounding Kagawa's case lead them to believe she was slain.

"We have a person of interest that we're investigating," Pierce County Sheriff's Detective Sergeant Denny Wood stated.

A motorist found her partially decomposed body off SR 510 on Tuesday.

Autopsy results to determine the cause and manner of Kagawa's death are pending.

The Sheriff's Office is heading up the investigation into her death.
