Crews to resume Bertha excavation after settlement

Crews will be allowed to resume excavation at the SR 99 tunnel access pit, Washington State Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

Seattle Tunnel Partners expects to resume digging Thursday evening.

WSDOT said it had “suspended excavation to give our team time to gather more survey data and review STP’s contingency plan for turning off the dewatering wells, should that become necessary.”

This comes more than a week after WSDOT shared that about one inch of settlement occurred near the access pit. STP suspended work to collect survey data and review a contingency plan, for precaution.

Excavation stopped at WSDOT’s direction on Dec. 12.

WSDOT says that data shows recently measured settlement has stabilized.
