A staple of Seafair’s Fleet Week for years, the Coast Guard cutter and chopper, will not be seen this year.
The Coast Guard announced it will not participate in either the Seafair Fleet Week celebrations or the Portland Rose Festival in 2013.
Budget cuts are being blamed for reduced participation in community events.
The Coast Guard says the cancellations are one of many steps it is taking to preserve its ability to meet high-priority activities, including search and rescue, critical security operations, and emergency response.
The Coast Guard will continue to provide safety zones and maritime enforcement during both events.
