Icy roads close schools, challenge drivers

SEATTLE - Several schools in Kitsap County are closed Friday because of concerns about ice on the roads that has proved to be treacherous for drivers.

Both Central Kitsap School District and North Kitsap School District announced via email that schools were closed.

King and Pierce county authorities advised drivers to be aware of the possibility of ice on the roads. Several crashes were reported overnight with ice on many of the main arterial roadways.

In North Seattle, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alexandra Limon spoke with a driver who slid off the road on Fifth Avenue between the 130th and 145th street exits of Interstate 5.

Jason Meadows said he was heading to work, exited I-5 and was heading toward Northgate when his truck hit black ice and started to spin.

Meadows said he may have overcorrected a bit too much and his truck crossed into the oncoming lane and ended up in a ditch.

“I’m definitely really fortunate that it’s early in the morning,” said Meadows.

Meadows said he wasn’t going that fast and warned drivers to keep it slow.    See traffic cameras and accident alerts
