An east Bremerton man is being held on $1 million bail, accused of beating an 8-week-old boy and even biting him and leaving teeth marks on the boy's arm.
Timothy Barnes, 28, was arrested after his girlfriend took her son to the hospital on Jan. 3 because he was listless and non-responsive after Barnes babysat the child days before. Kitsap County sheriff's spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said the boy was taken to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma where he was admitted into intensive care in critical condition.
"Child abuse specialists at Mary Bridge indicated this was a case where there could be a possibility of death," said Wilson. He added the child has swelling and injuries to his brain as well as fractures to his ribs. "There were issues with a human bite mark on the child's arm and some bruising on his skull and also other parts of his body and the possibility of fluid buildup in his abdomen." A spokeswoman at Mary Bridge said no information on the child was available for release late Monday.
Barnes was arrested Friday on a charge of first-degree assault of a child. He was ordered held following a probable cause hearing in Kitsap County District Court on Monday.
Wilson said Barnes is not the boy's biological father but shares childcare duties with his mother, who is 24. He described the abuse as particularly severe. "This child's life is on the line and there's no excuse for any kind of child abuse but especially one with a 28-year-old man and an 8-week-old infant."
