Boy hit by tree, dies while hiking in Olympic National Forest


MASON COUNTY, Wash. - A 12-year-old boy died from his injuries after being hit on the head by a tree while hiking Saturday afternoon in the Olympic National Forest.

According to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, the boy and his father were hiking near the lower Lena Lake Trail, in the Lilliwuap area, when he was injured.

Deputies said the boy’s father is reported to be a doctor, and used a cellphone to report the incident and advised 911 that his son suffered a major head injury.

According to deputies, the boy didn’t have a pulse for more than 30 minutes.

Search and rescue teams from three counties responded to the scene.
