7 teens injured in Pierce County 1-vehicle crash

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — Seven teens were injured in a crash early Saturday morning, said officials with the Washington State Patrol.

The collision happened on Interstate 5 near DuPont after midnight.

According to the State Patrol, a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling on the southbound lanes when the driver hit the brakes and went into the grass median. The car slid, struck a pillar and came to a rest after rotating 180 degrees.

The crash caused the engine to rip out of the vehicle.

The driver of the car was a 16-year-old girl. The other passengers were five girls and one boy, ages 15 to 17.

Three teen girls were taken to Madigan Army Medical Center and three teen girls were taken to Tacoma General Hospital. The teen boy was injured in the crash, but was not taken to a hospital.
