Multiple boats burn in Skagit County marina fire

LA CONNER, Wash. — Multiple boats have burned at a marina near La Conner in northwest Washington, sending up a huge cloud of black smoke.

The fire was reported late Friday afternoon at the Shelter Bay Marina.

Fire crews poured water on the blazing boats from land and from a fireboat. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Harbormaster Jim Dobbs told KIRO 7 initially that four boats were burning with a handful of others threatened. Shelter Bay community manager Dave Franklin said a short time later that he believed 20 boats caught fire.

Witness Mandy Conca stopped as she was driving home and saw the fire spread from two boats to about six as she watched.

The marina website says it is located within a private, gated community situated on the Swinomish Channel just across from La Conner.
