1 dead after boat capsizes in crash near Shilshole Marina

SEATTLE — A man is dead after a boat capsized following a crash in the waters off Shilshole Marina in Ballard.

Just shortly after 4 p.m., a 16-foot boat and a 44-foot boat collided, and two men on the 16-foot boat were thrown into the water.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alison Grande has learned that occupants in the larger vessel brought the two men ashore.

The Coast Guard said people on board another boat reported seeing two men in the water and called for help.

Suquamish Tribal police were fueling their boat in the Shilshole area when the incident occurred.   Two officers boarded the boat and officers conducted CPR on one man, who survived.

The Seattle Police Department’s harbor patrol and the Coast Guard responded soon after.

The other man, who was in his 70s, was declared dead at the scene, the Seattle Fire Department said.

Video from Chopper 7 showed a Seattle police boat with a line attached to the overturned boat.  It was then towed to the marina.

The surviving man was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, and is currently in stable condition.

According to the Seattle Police Department, there were no signs of impairment.

It is unknown at this time what preceded the collision and an investigation continues.
