1 dead, deputy injured after police chase ends near Renton

RENTON, Wash. — A man died and a deputy was injured during an early Saturday morning chase, said the King County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Skyway Fire Department, the chase went through Skyway and ended near Renton.

The Sheriff's Office said before 4 a.m., Kent police asked for assistance in stopping a driver, suspected of driving under the influence, they were chasing southbound on Interstate 5 after he failed to stop.

Deputies joined the pursuit and chased the driver southbound on Martin Luther King Way.

Washington Department of Transportation cameras caught the pursuit around 4 a.m.

Officials said the driver hit two patrol cars, one with the Renton Police Department and one with the King County Sheriff’s Office, and continued driving.

During the pursuit, the driver lost control at a turn where Martin Luther King Way becomes Sunset Road.

Deputies said the driver went over an embankment at State Route 900 and 134th Street.

The fire department said the car plummeted 20 feet into a ravine and hit several trees on the way down.

The driver died at the scene.

A deputy was injured and taken to the hospital, and was released later in good condition.

The area around SR 900 and Sunset Boulevard was shut down for several hours for officers to investigate, but later reopened.
