For Sale: $19 Million Blue Diamond

If you’re in the market to purchase the largest round fancy vivid blue diamond in the world, you might want to book a ticket to Hong Kong for October. That’s when Sotheby’s Hong Kong has scheduled its Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Autumn Sale, which features the spectacular Premier Blue diamond. But if you go, be sure to bring your checkbook — experts believe that this unique stone will fetch more than $19 million at auction.

At 7.59 carats, the Premier Blue is the largest fancy vivid blue diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America. The brilliant-cut stone has been judged internally flawless, and excitement is growing in anticipation of the October 7 auction in Hong Kong. Back in 2011, Sotheby’s Hong Kong sold a 6.01 fancy vivid blue diamond for more than $1.6 million, but the Premier Blue should easily eclipse that mark.

According to the world-famous auction house, the round brilliant cut isn’t used very often for colored diamonds simply because the process involves wasting a large amount of the stone in the cutting process. “No significant round fancy vivid blue diamond has ever appeared at auction worldwide, thus making the Premier Blue a rare and exceptional gem,” the auction house said.

However, Sotheby’s did sell a larger blue diamond (emerald cut rather than round brilliant cut) this year. In April 2013, an 8.01-carat fancy vivid blue diamond in a ring sold for $12.7 million. The most expensive jewel ever sold at auction? For that, you have to go back to November 2010 in Geneva when Laurence Graff paid $46.16 million for a 24.78-carat emerald-cut fancy intense pink diamond — now called the “Graff Pink.”

Another highlight of this fall’s Hong Kong auction is a 8.03-carat cushion-shaped natural pigeon’s blood Burmese ruby, which has been set into a ring and is expected to sell for up to $4.2 million. Also on the auction block: a 10.94-carat pear-shaped fancy light pink diamond set into a ring and surrounded by marquise-shaped diamonds. Sotheby’s estimates this beauty could go for between $1.9 million and $2.3 million.
