'Top Gun 2': Jennifer Connelly in talks to star with Tom Cruise in sequel

Jennifer Connelly is looking to join Tom Cruise in "Top Gun: Maverick."

The Oscar-winning "The Beautiful Mind" actress is in talks for a starring role in the "Top Gun" sequel, a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly tells USA TODAY.

Connelly recently starred in the fire fighter drama "Only the Brave" with director Joseph Kosinski, who is directing "Top Gun: Maverick."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, if the deal goes through, Connelly, 47, will play a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base where Cruise's flight instructor Pete "Maverick" Mitchell works.

Cruise has already filmed scenes in San Diego for his return to the beloved Maverick character from 1986's  "Top Gun." The main filming will resume in September.

Miles Teller has been cast as the pilot son of Maverick's wingman Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards). Goose died in "Top Gun" during a flight accident with Maverick at the controls.
